Why your ROAS is lying to you
Platform-reported returns flatter almost every channel. Here's how to find the number that's actually true.
Every ad platform grades its own homework. Each one counts the sales it touched, and most of those sales were touched by several platforms at once. Add up what each dashboard claims and you will often find more revenue than your bank account received.
That gap is where growth budgets go to die. A channel looks profitable, gets more money, and the business gets no bigger.
Three ways the number flatters you
The question isn't “what did this channel touch?” It's “what would we have lost without it?”
Find the true number
Start with the blended view: total revenue divided by total marketing spend, from your own finance system rather than any platform. It is blunt, but it cannot be gamed.
Then test what each channel actually adds. Hold back a group of people or a region from a campaign and compare them with everyone else. The difference is the channel's real contribution, and it is usually smaller, and more useful, than the dashboard's.
Finally, measure in profit, not revenue. A return that ignores product costs and refunds will steer you towards your least profitable customers.
